Besides being the debut of director Upi and MD Pictures, the film Sorop is making its international debut at the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) in Busan, South Korea.

Manoj Punjabi, as the film producer and CEO of MD Entertainment, collaborated with Barunson E&A, the production company behind the Oscar-winning film Parasite, to promote the film Sorop.

“We are very excited to collaborate with Barunson E&A to bring Sorop to the international market. Sorop offers a unique blend of local folklore and supernatural intrigue that we believe will captivate international audiences. With Barunson’s expertise and vision, we are confident that this film will shine on a global scale,” said Manoj Punjabi.

This received a positive response from Barunson E&A since the introduction of the film Sorop to them.

“We are excited to collaborate with the amazing creators from Indonesia. We have high hopes for our collaboration with MD Pictures. Of course, this builds a strong foundation in Indonesia with Barunson E&A’s expertise at the international level. Meaning of Sorop

The meaning of sorop itself is a term from the Javanese language “Sorop” or “Surup“—which means the time approaching evening or Maghrib. It’s no wonder that the film’s setting is mostly dark, as it approaches nighttime, when it is said that supernatural beings begin to reveal themselves.

In accordance with the SimpleMan thread titled “Sorop” which highlights the sorop fasting, this film will also depict that. Sorop fasting is a ritual performed to summon spirits. People in the colonial era often performed this unusual fasting ritual, but it turns out that in modern times like now, there are still some who practice it as well.

The story of Sorop SimpleMan thread then became a feature film that will be released simultaneously on December 19, 2024—truly a horror yet sweet ending to the year.
