Manoj Punjabi and All the Cast Explain the Meaning of Ipar Adalah Maut Film at the Official Final Trailer and Poster Release
Manoj Punjabi: “Thank you for coming to the trailer and poster launch. We are ready to broadcast on June 13, 2024, simultaneously throughout Indonesia. On June 10th, we will watch the movie together at the Gala Premiere. So, get ready if you want to watch the film on June 10. Also, I am very excited about waiting for this film to be shown, what the audience’s perception will be, and everything. Thank you, everyone is brilliant. I’ve seen the film dozens of times, and it’s almost done. I still remember this story in March when I was told there was a new concept, the words viral are important, true stories are very important, and the title Ipar Adalah Maut, wow. So, three things that are interesting to me. Then I was told. I wanted us to meet immediately, a week later, we finally worked on the script, and almost a year later, it was ready to be broadcast. This is express work, but not something we rush, underestimate, nope—proper hard work. After six intense months, we shot it in October, and now it’s ready to be shown in cinemas. Once again, I am satisfied with these results. And also my partner, Hanung Bramantyo, and he did a very good job. And that’s it. We’re ready. And this is our final and third poster, yes. The first is the teaser, poster, and the final poster. And you also watched the trailer, yesterday, there were also two soundtracks, Lyodra, Mytha, Melly, and Yovie—imagine the complete package here—don’t worry. I give the entire cast two thumbs up.”

Deva Mahenra: “It feels great to see it together for the first time. Cool poster, really cool. Hopefully, we can meet soon. It felt great to be able to collaborate again with friends whose energy was extraordinary, especially Mas Hanung—who I felt was like a film school kid who was working on his first film at that time—so his energy was really extraordinary. And it fills us as players, really building to the emotion, then scene after scene. Hopefully whatever emotions we convey can be felt by all viewers.”
Michelle Ziudith: “Very happy. Honestly, this is also the first time I’ve seen the poster. Many people have tagged the trailer on Instagram, so I saw bits and pieces of it. But, today I saw the whole trailer and I feel like this second one is my favorite. The story of Ipar Adalah Maut film has opened up many things and made me curious, the pain has also increased. I hope what’s here feels more burning than seeing the first trailer. I can’t wait for it to show soon. Nervous. I want to see the reaction too. And I haven’t watched it myself. I’m also curious about what Michelle’s version of Nisa is like. Hopefully many people will enjoy it,”
Davina Karamoy: “I am very happy. Maybe finally this trailer starts to tell the story about Rani. Starting from little Rani is already in this trailer. I really like the trailer and poster, even though there are more and more insults, yes, at Rani because Rani looks the happiest here. Hopefully, everyone likes and takes positive things from this film.”
Eliza Sifa: “Starting with Rani, who is still innocent. There, you look innocent and already know Aris, but the two of them will create a new drama. So, Mom also really regrets it, especially being Nisa. This is not just a film, but a true story that exists and must be highlighted. And the aim of me telling this story is also to let everyone know that things like this are real, not just made up, but real. And hopefully, this story can be a lesson, yes, for us as parents’ families—where our Bude is normalizing younger siblings or older siblings living with the family—and this can, you know, happen. I want to open people’s eyes.”
Dewi Irawan: “When it was first published, Mas Sanjay said it was viral. Until now my friends say they don’t want to watch it because it’s horror. Even though it’s not. This is drama. This is true, when I read the story, I read more and more, oh my goodness! That happened, yeah. This upsets her mother. I was annoyed when I read it.”
Devina Aureel: “The poster, how come, Rani is the happy one? How come you are the happiest? This is your sister’s family, so why are you coming along? It’s annoying, yes, for Nisa, but I’m annoyed with Aris. How could that be?”
Adam Farrel: “I’m really curious, after seeing the trailer for these two (Rani and Aris). And I’m really happy to be a small part of Ipar Adalah Maut here. It hurts, yeah. Even as a guy, I’m like, can there be people like Mas Aris? Maybe get ready for Mas Aris and Rani to become public enemies!”
Q&A (Questionas & Answers) Media towards the Cast, the Writer of Ipar Adalah Maut (Eliza Sifa), and Manoj Punjabi about the Meaning of Ipar Adalah Maut
The following are questions from the media to the cast, writer, and director of Ipar Adalah Maut film.
Question 1:
- “What was it like after completing the script? Are you ready to become a big enemy of Indonesian mothers?”
- “For Michelle Ziudith, many people say that Nisa is a victim. So, she will easily win the hearts of the audience. What were the challenges of playing Nisa during filming?”
- “For Manoj Punjabi, is Hanung Bramantyo the first choice as a director? And what is the reason?”
Answers:
Deva Mahenra: “He certainly felt very relieved after completing his role as Aris. Lots of discussions with Mas Hanung. That was one of the sedatives during the filming process. Because of what the impact of this character will be, I’m not thinking about what it will be like, but how Aris’ character can work as well as possible. That’s why there are discussions every day. Until sometimes being scolded by Mas Hanung several times because he was always trying to give new options, especially the emotions that Aris was trying to display—where Aris was the head of the household, father, brother-in-law—however, he went outside the rules that had been established. And even more proud to work with such an extraordinary cast. And it’s nice to work with Mas Hanung again because he has energy like a student, excited when we’re shooting. That’s very helpful.”
Davina Karamoy: “After completing the scenario the first time, honestly, I was definitely relieved. And read more forgiveness from the beginning. I felt unimaginable pain. As Rani, I played this character, and at first I was a little confused about what the reference would be. What would it feel like to have an affair with my sister’s husband—we’ve been very close since childhood, girls—suddenly having to be in love—how could you, Rani, really, how could you? Of course, when playing Rani, at first, there were doubts—could it be done or not—and how to get the most out of Rani’s character. When it comes to thinking about netizens, I don’t really think about it either, it’s just being funny. Because, right, he hates Rani, not Davina. In fact, the more hate, the better!”
Michelle Ziudith: “Actually, before filming, I was already crying. Lots of debate, really long talks. Maybe it would take two or three months for me to really know what condition Nisa was in, what kind of anger she was in, how she was dealing with her situation—according to Mas Hanung’s scenario and directions. So, I chatted with Mas Hanung. In my own account, I was screaming long before I filmed it. So, it’s very deep.”
Manoj Punjabi: “My first choice was definitely Mr. Hanung. As soon as I got this, I knew who I wanted. Hanung immediately said he was interested. I want to go all out because stories like this sometimes are doubtful. But for me, this story is actually like this. And with Mr. Hanung, there is history from Ayat-Ayat Cinta, Surga, Habibie, and now is seriously his comeback here. Satisfied. I already miss religion-type drama movies. I already explained what I want. In terms of this story, I often ask Eliza, is this a genuine story? So, this original story is very interesting to me, and the drama from Hanung comes out. And this script has 17 drafts, Hanung went back and forth to 27 drafts in total. It’s not a joke; we took six months to do this. I already know what the chemistry is like between me and Mas Hanung. Argue in front, behind him we got. There are additional elements that make it very interesting. I really, after several years of comeback with this, seem really satisfied.”
Question 2:
- “For Manoj Punjabi, perhaps it’s a rare event to release a poster and trailer twice. Is there a correlation to changing the broadcast schedule so the audience doesn’t forget about this project, or are you not afraid that the content will be a bit different the more it is shown to the audience?”
- “For Michelle Ziudith, several times Nisa’s story was so deep for Michelle that it carried over, but for the other cast, do you feel the same way? How painful is this second trailer?”
Answers:
Manoj Punjabi: “At the beginning of May 16 there were thoughts, May 23 again, then either 9, but none of this was a strategy. This is more of a technical problem, right, the mixing is from America, so the schedule is pushed back. It got mixed for three months. Because I want an MD film sound, you can pay attention, for me drama is very important. Sound mixing sometimes has to enter our souls. We watch even though there is music, and we don’t feel it. Maybe subconsciously, the audience will realize that sound is very important and become relatable. Until now if the film is forced, it could be shown this week, but what’s the rush? And the strategy in June is very appropriate because of Eid Haji. The exhibitors also know that this is a big film, and we don’t know the results, but the timing should be right. That’s the reason for the delay, and in trailer two, there was already a strategy from the front to make this happen. Because the song is one Melly, one Yovie—both are top class, the best. It can’t be a two-song trailer—darling. Incidentally, everything has a silver lining. I’m more optimistic now that June is right. Then, if you think you already know the story, you are wrong. You won’t guess. But here it’s interesting, the twists and turns from scene to scene, and it’s really relatable. Of course, I don’t know the real story, 50% or how much—it’s dramatized for sure, but the dramatization is very relatable. So I guarantee that whether it’s brothers, sisters, relatives, neighbors, friends, we’ve all definitely related to this. We thought a lot of it would be revealed more, but don’t, let’s just be a surprise.”
Michelle Ziudith: “Honestly, during the filming process, I still asked her to have lunch with Davina in the first week, But, I started doing some scenes that were quite deep, and I ate myself. Maybe I don’t have the ability to control my emotions well enough. I really enjoy myself. I’m looking for my own time. I told everyone I was fine. But don’t worry if I don’t smile and don’t look okay. Because in my opinion, it’s difficult, yes, to position your emotions again when you want to shoot. I need quite a long time. So, I understand myself. Even Mas Aris sat far away. I’m really annoyed by them. When filming in the studio, I don’t chat much. I just asked if you had eaten everything, that’s all. When I come home I always don’t feel well. The moment made me feel unwell, maybe because I was controlling or holding back my emotions.”

Question 3
- “After starting the process of production and shooting, can you share from Davina, Michelle, Deva—What do you think is the real death in a relationship?”
Answers:
Michelle Ziudith: “The real death, in my opinion, Because we are already married, I think the real death in life or relationships is being tied but not connected, being close but not linked. So, being present for each other physically, but not in heart and mind.” is a small lie. This is for Michelle, not Nisa. From our own house, we were always taught that if you lie at all, mothers know, and mothers won’t ever get mad because maybe there are reasons for lying. Maybe it’s Mom’s fault for allowing you to lie. From that, I have learned that lying is really unnecessary. It’s not just about saving myself but also hurting others.”
Deva Mahenra: “Because we are already married, I think the real death in life or relationships is being tied but not connected, being close but not linked. So, being present for each other physically, but not in heart and mind.”
Davina Karamoy: “I agree with Michelle—it is lying— lying in any shape whatsoever, that might be the seeds leading to death. I think that also relates to the movie.”
Question 4:
- “For Eliza Sifa as the writer of ‘Ipar Adalah Maut,‘ how was the adaptation rights process with the people, such as Aris and others? How was their availability, and were they willing for the story to be turned into a novel?”
- “For Manoj Punjabi, were there any communications with Aris or Rani in real life? Additionally, how is the availability of drama movies in Indonesia?”
Answers:
Eliza Sifa: “When I decided to share this story, Mba Nisa did not expect it to go extremely viral. When it was time for it to be adopted by MD, initially, it was tough because I had to convince Mba Nisa who did not want her family to be brought in, her child, and her environment to be exposed. So, she allowed this story to be adapted with a condition that nobody is allowed to know who Mba Nisa is except for her extended family. Recently, when the content went viral, many people commented, claiming they knew the real Mba Nisa. I deleted the comments. We can not control such things. Maybe I will say to those who know Mba Nisa and Aris in real life, please keep silent as it is starting to disturb the real Mba Nisa.”
Manoj Punjabi: “I was not allowed to meet with Rani or Aris because Eliza protected them. I am curious who they are. But what is certain is Nisa, as a woman, gives an extremely positive inspiration. This presents a challenge because if it were only horror movies, our industry wouldn’t be healthy. And Drama is not easy. I hope that I am working hard on the script, concepts, and crazy promotion to make this movie a box office hit. It is not guaranteed, but I am optimistic about hard work. If this is a success, it will bring new hope. It is great if horror or comedy is successful, but if drama makes a comeback, I believe it’s not about the genre, but there hasn’t been a box office hit drama. If this is right, it can be a box office hit. I will not give up trying to create new genres. This drama, yet challenging, is aimed at becoming a box office hit. From the exhibitors’ side, they are very positive. When we said we were doing this, the exhibitors were very enthusiastic. I had conversations with them, and they know that this is an ‘A’ film. It is treated like a big movie. This is important to me as the effort, the cast, the directors, and the production house, are very important. I think we can not give up.”
Question 5:
- “For Eliza Sifa, Have you watched the movie? How was the process of creating this scenario—Have there been many changes from what was written or what was taken the same?
- “For Alesha Fadillah Kurniawan, tell us about the fun experiences that made you stick with Michelle Ziudith!”
Answers:
Eliza Sifa: “I have already watched, but it was still the rough cut. Even just the rough cut made me cry a lot. I already knew the story and read the script in detail, but the emotional impact was there. In my opinion, Mr. Manoj and Mr. Hanung have really good chemistry. Everyone who watched it with me also cried when watching. This actually matched my expectations.”
Alesha Fadillah Kurniawan: “While shooting, it was really fun. Everyone was kind. With Fa, it’s not only the work, but we also like to joke. The Jokes are very dad-like. Crying scenes were challenging, though.”
