Laura is a film inspired by the true story of influencer Laura Anna’s struggle with a spinal cord injury and her efforts to break free from a toxic relationship. The movie hit theaters on September 12, 2024, just eight days before what would have been Laura Anna’s birthday on September 20.
With the theme “A True Story of a Fighter,” the film focuses on Laura’s life (played by Amanda Rawles) after her return from Hungary. Previously known as a cheerful celebrity loved by her friends and family, Laura’s vibrant life suddenly turned black and white when she became paralyzed due to a car accident caused by her boyfriend, Jojo (played by Kevin Ardilova).
Producer Manoj Punjabi from MD Pictures stated that Laura is scarier than any horror genre film he has ever watched. Through the drama genre, the tragedy that befell the late Laura feels even more real and personal.
“For me, this story is truly scarier than a horror movie. We don’t want this to happen to anyone. It’s very deep,” said the producer of KKN di Desa Penari during the launch of the final trailer of Laura at Grand Indonesia Jakarta, on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
Manoj chose Hanung Bramantyo as the director, following his success in directing another film inspired by a true story, Ipar Adalah Maut.
The film Laura revolves around the final years of Laura Anna’s life, who passed away in December 2021.
Laura Anna is depicted as an influencer with over 1 million followers on Instagram. Amidst her rising popularity, Laura met a man who won her heart, Jojo, and they began dating. Ironically, her relationship with Jojo marked the beginning of the disaster that would later strike Laura.
Initially, Jojo appeared to be a romantic and kind boyfriend. However, over time, his true nature began to surface—he financially exploited Laura and often played the victim.
One night, the couple was involved in a car accident while returning from a nightclub. Laura was left paralyzed, while Jojo only suffered minor injuries.
The drama continues, highlighting the ups and downs of Laura’s relationship with Jojo, the support of Laura’s family and close friends as caregivers, and Laura’s fight to overcome her struggles.
Laura became the 12th Indonesian film of 2024 to surpass 1 million viewers.
