Perewangan is a horror film inspired by a viral X thread by @JeroPoint. The movie explores the ancient tradition of forming alliances with supernatural beings or evil spirits in pursuit of success and wealth. However, the price paid by those who practice this is incredibly steep.
In Javanese, perewangan means “helper.” According to the book Dunia Hantu Orang Jawa by Suwardi Endraswara, a perewangan refers to a spirit kept to assist its owner in various matters. Typically, a perewangan is summoned through special rituals and given certain offerings.
In the film Perewangan, the main character Maya (played by Davina Karamoy) must endure the terrifying consequences of being haunted by a perewangan tied to her family. Not only Maya, but every member of her family, from her siblings to her uncles, falls prey to the perewangan‘s demands for blood sacrifices.
After her father’s mysterious death, Maya grows increasingly suspicious of her aunt and uncles, who seem to be eyeing her mother Sudarsih’s (Ully Triani) inheritance. Sudarsih has been bedridden and silent for years.
Since her father’s death, Maya’s uncles and aunt have openly shown their ambition to seize the land and house that Sudarsih inherited. As a result, Maya distances herself from them.
Over time, Maya’s nightmares and the terror she experiences grow more intense. Even her mother, who has been mute and bedridden for years, begins to display strange behavior. Maya eventually realizes that the danger threatening her family is something far more malevolent than human greed.
Maya is even more shocked to discover that the evil spirit terrorizing her family is the result of a grave mistake made by her mother.
In pursuit of short-term glory, Sudarsih continued the ritual of summoning a perewangan, and now the family must suffer the consequences, paying a blood price for seven generations to satisfy the spirit. Now, the creature has set its sights on Maya.
Perewangan is directed by Awi Suryadi, the director behind Indonesia’s highest-grossing film, KKN di Desa Penari. Awi’s signature chilling terror will begin to haunt Indonesian cinemas with Perewangan starting on October 24, 2024.
