The horror film Petak Umpet will terrify Indonesian cinemas starting November 21, 2024. This latest work by director Rizal Mantovani is based on a true story that went viral on YouTube under the title Diculik Wewe Gombel.
Hide and seek itself is a children’s game that is popular all over the world, including Indonesia. Played by having one person guard with their eyes closed while the others hide, hide-and-seek actually holds many urban legends behind it.
The film Petak Umpet, produced by Pichouse FILMS and PAW Pictures, tells one of the urban legends about a child who doesn’t return after playing hide and seek because they were kidnapped by wewe gombel.
In this film, the story is about a pair of siblings named Rahman (Randy Martin) and Sari. (Alesha Fadillah). One day, the mother asked Rahman to accompany his younger sibling to play outside. However, the older brother half-heartedly followed his mother’s request.
Rahman then told Sari to play hide and seek with her friends, while he himself was busy playing a game on his phone. Until the day began to darken, Sari had not returned.
Her friends said Sari was hiding in the old house. It is said that the house has long been uninhabited due to a murder incident and has now become a den for wewe gombel. In the past, the house was inhabited by a woman who mercilessly killed her own children because her husband cheated on her.
Sari’s disappearance made her mother, Masayu (Putri Ayudya), distressed and only able to cry all day. Finally, Rahman decided to search for his sister with his two friends, Rinto (Adam Farrel) and Shila (Saskia Chadwick).
When Rahman entered the haunted house where his sister was hiding, just one step inside, the door suddenly locked. He, who came to save Sari, ended up being the one who needed saving.
In the original story on the RJL 5 – Fajar Aditya YouTube channel, the source claimed that Sari never returned home after 16 years had passed since the incident. Finally, Sari’s family moved to a new house to forget the tragic event that befell their child. Meanwhile, Sari was considered missing, having been kidnapped by someone.
