Hanung Bramantyo: “This tells something that is actually close to us, commonly done by families; a mother who entrusts her younger sibling to her older sibling who is already married. Something that is considered common and right, but it turns out to be wrong. And that happens a lot in our families. And finally, the act that was previously considered right turns out to have a bad impact—an affair between in-laws. Even though if you trace who is wrong, there is none. There is no wrong or right here. This all happened because of ignorance.”

Hanung Bramantyo: “Personally, I am very interested in this project. When I read the hadith narrated by Bukhari Muslim—“al-hamwu al-maut” that brother-in-law is death—I was really shocked. It turns out that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said “al-maut;” he said that it was a relationship that would become death. In this case, death is not the real meaning, but death is the deadlock of the relationship between siblings—older brother and younger brother, be it male or female. Because, an affair that should not have happened, but circumstances made it all happen. So, yes, that’s what made me interested. This is important for me to use as information for myself and my family. Because it is important, I am sure it will be important for all of society. According to Islam, brother-in-law is forbidden. That is not a mahram. It is not permissible to live in the same house as a sibling and a husband.”

Hanung Bramantyo: “Nisa is played by Michelle Ziudith. She is a very independent character. From her time in college, it was already apparent that she was independent. She came from an orphaned family, her father was no longer around. She moved from Salatiga to Semarang to go to college. She had a talent for baking and she had a dream of having a cake stall. When she was in college, she met Aris. Aris is a good and honest man; he is a lecturer, smart; and he graduated from Canada. He received a scholarship that came from his achievements, not because of privilege from his family. Indeed, they were born from independent people, both (Aris and Nisa). This is an independent couple. Then, they met, and Aris, because he saw Nisa’s potential who could cook, make delicious cakes, Aris as a husband encouraged his wife to pursue a career there. Because of her husband’s encouragement, it turned out that she was more successful and got what Nisa aspired to, which was to have her own stall. This family is actually very happy. There is nothing wrong here, because both of them hold fast to the principles of the household, namely loyalty and responsibility. Well, because this younger sibling, Rani—she was born into a family that perhaps if Nisa were her older sibling—has experienced the love of a father, but Rani has not. Since she was little, her father has died (for Rani). So, she has fatherless issues. She does not have parental love and that is what makes her when she sees a very mature, understanding, protective figure, finally her sensitivity, her shortcomings towards the father figure are then bought.”

It might be cheaper economically, but it would be a very dangerous situation for the family.”

Hanung Bramantyo: “Don’t let us be afraid of our parents, our in-laws when our parents have violated what the Prophet Muhammad SAW said. So, don’t play with fire with what the Prophet Muhammad SAW said. It’s better to follow it and our parents also need to be educated. It takes courage to do that rather than us having to bear the consequences later.”
