The Laura film, inspired by the true story of Laura Anna, was finally released on Netflix on Friday, January 10, 2025. Previously, this film produced by MD Pictures and Dapur Film attracted a total of 1,261,521 viewers since its release in theaters on September 12, 2024, until it was taken off the screen.
Hanung Bramantyo was appointed as the director for the film Laura, after previously successfully directing the phenomenal film Ipar adalah Maut, which garnered over 4 million viewers.
The film Laura tells the story of the late Laura Anna’s struggle to break free from a toxic relationship and find happiness after an accident with her boyfriend. Amanda Rawles, who plays the character Laura, admitted that she finally understood why Laura found it difficult to end her toxic relationship.
In real life, Laura Anna was in a relationship with fellow influencer, Gaga Muhammad. They both got into a car accident while Gaga was driving under the influence. Laura became paralyzed and had to undergo bed rest for two years before passing away.
While still in treatment and rehabilitation, Laura admitted that she was cheated on by Gaga. Her boyfriend was also said to have used Laura’s money for medical expenses. However, Laura still tried to maintain their relationship.
“Besides, yes, I was angry with this guy, but I also understand, right,” said Amanda Rawles in the podcast Curhat Bang Denny Sumargo.
“In my opinion, why Laura still holds on to him, I understand,” she continued. “Just imagine, I’m lying on the bed, no guy would want me. It’s like I’m afraid of being alone.”
The film Laura is directed by Hanung Bramantyo as the director, while the screenplay is written by Alim Sudio.
During the launching event of the final trailer for the film Laura at Grand Indonesia on Thursday (8/8/2024), Hanung mentioned that the film uses the point of view (PoV) of Laura Anna’s family. Therefore, besides Laura and her family, other characters use fictional names. For example, Laura’s boyfriend in the film is named Jojo and is played by Kevin Ardilova.
Hanung adopts the drama genre and incorporates elements of subjectivity regarding the misfortunes that befall Laura. The drama presented includes the sibling relationship between Laura (Amanda Rawles) and Iren (Carissa Perusset), as well as the toxic relationship with the manipulative Jojo.
In the film, Jojo is portrayed as a lover who exploits Laura for economic gain. One time, he drove Laura home from the nightclub while drunk. As a result, the couple had a fatal accident, leaving Laura paralyzed.
However, Jojo refuses to take responsibility and does not feel guilty. He always claims to be a fellow accident victim and is reluctant to pay for Laura’s medical expenses until her boyfriend takes his last breath.
“Laura’s story is tragic, how the accident she faced left Laura paralyzed. But, she can still smile and has the spirit to live her life,” said Hanung at the gala premiere of the film Laura at Epicentrum XXI Jakarta, Monday (9/9/2024).
“I avoid the so-called ITE Law, which is very prone to ensnaring all of us. So, because this film is subjective, my point of view is towards Laura, that’s why the film is titled Laura,” he continued. “The main characters are only Laura and her family. The rest, we used other character names.”
