Initially, Nisa thought Aris was cheating, but had not thought with whom. Nisa found a lot of evidence that pointed to Aris’ affair behind her back. When Aris still found reasons for Nisa not to continue being suspicious, Nisa admitted her guilt to Aris for being overly suspicious. Even though her suspicions were true.
Over time, Nisa got the answer that Aris was cheating with her own sister-in-law, Rani. The heartache that Nisa felt was not easy to heal of course. In fact, her relationship with her biological sister—Rani—was not necessarily like it used to be as harmonious as it was. With the film Ipar Adalah Maut, do you think women have trust issues with their partners?
Mytha Lestari: “Definitely! For women out there who watch Ipar Adalah Maut, your partner, whether your husband or boyfriend, will be your first dial. But, maybe this isn’t a trust issue, more like “We should talk about this so that there are no trust issues between us.” But it’s good, Ipar Adalah Maut is a film that can make us aware of many aspects. In fact, this film is able to build trust.”
How do you feel that your viral story has finally been made into a film?
Eliza Sifa: “I didn’t expect it at first. Moreover, I originally took this story from Mbak Nisa. She wanted to teach women a lesson that things like this actually exist—that was her intention.”
According to Mytha Lestari, who is married, can a woman’s silence backfire on a relationship?
Mytha Lestari: “Not at all. Because I learned to be silent in my 7th year of marriage. In the first to sixth year, my husband was ranting, and so was I. Oh, it turned out to be a complete mess. From there, I realized that someone had to give in. And men generally have pride above women. For me, I’m an alpha woman, and it turns out my pride is also above that. So, now I’m more like this “People who are emotionally intelligent can hold things back better.” So, emotions are still there, but it’s better for you to control your emotions yourself and let your husband or partner control their own emotions. If they keep talking about bad things, we’d rather be alone first. So I just learned to be silent and be very comfortable and save a lot of things. But, there are two aspects to silence—saving when you’re emotional, but don’t be silent when you want to fix problems.”
If you were in Nisa’s position in Ipar Adalah Maut, as a woman, what would you do?
Mytha Lestari: “There was one line in the film “I’ve been turning off my instincts as a woman for years,” and that’s something I wouldn’t do because, since the first time I got married, a wife’s instinct is something that must be on continuously—it can’t be turned off. If there’s a saying “The husband is a general, the wife must be the president,” that means you as a wife must be smarter, more alert, and more aware than your husband. Because, no matter what, by nature, men are created to be tempted. So, we as women must keep that instinct on. And if I were in Nisa’s position, I would talk to Aris. Nisa was really angry, because maybe she was in denial and she became a very dangerous time bomb. Well, I should keep my instinct on, so that when bad things happen, I won’t be too shocked. I’m not an option. If your partner wants to choose, please choose her (the affair partner), I will step down. And one more thing: the suspicion must be confronted.”
Do you agree that a woman’s figure is the deciding factor in a relationship?
Eliza Sifa: “No, it has to be both. It’s the same as us trying to be a good partner, while our men aren’t like that. Well, it can’t be. It’s a relationship, so the effort must come from both parties. That’s the key to maintaining a relationship.”
In your opinion, what should a good wife be like in the eyes of your husband?
Mytha Lestari: “Maybe my husband and I are a strange couple. Indonesians have a stereotype of what a good wife should be like, from the way they dress, the topics of conversation, and their behavior. Well, according to my husband, I am a good wife with my form because I can make him overcome his fears and ego. Also, I can be invited to exchange ideas where he can’t get answers from other people. So a good wife is just being the best for your husband with no bad intentions. Basically, have one goal in mind to grow old together, die together, and meet him in the afterlife.”
What message do you want to convey from the song ‘Tak Pantas’ and what message do you want to convey to the real Nisa?
Mytha Lestari: “Mbak Nisa, it seems like you and Mbak Eliza will get a reward for giving a long life, because you provide a lot of knowledge, and awareness, for women like us and for Indonesians who like to normalize things that are not normal. It can’t be called normal if we are not aware. Then secondly, thank you for sharing your story with Mbak Eliza. Mbak Eliza also thanks you for sharing with us. You are the best women who have dared to make the film Ipar Adalah Maut. From this great story, the song ‘Tak Pantas’ came to be.”
