The film Perewangan is released in theaters on October 24, 2024. As the title suggests, this latest horror film from MD Pictures highlights the terror from a perewangan kept by a restaurant owner. This spirit is said to demand a sacrifice for seven generations! Indeed, what is perewangan?
If you are Javanese, you must have heard the term rewang, which means ‘helping out’. Well, perewangan is derived from that word, which means ‘helper’. But, the perewangan meant here is not like a housekeeper or babysitter. So, what is it then?
In a paper titled Dhanyang and Prewangan in the USK Sociology Journal, perewangan is described as “subtle beings that accompany humans throughout their lives,” also known as khodam.
Perewangan is a subtle spirit believed to live in a world different from humans. It enters or is deliberately inserted into someone’s body for various purposes. Perewangan can then communicate with other living people.
In Javanese tradition, perewangan is associated with the existence of supernatural beings that coexist with humans in a mutualistic or mutually beneficial manner. On one hand, perewangan can serve as a “place” to live, while the humans accompanied by it can use the perewangan as needed.
So, how do you obtain a perewangan? According to the previous article, Javanese society generally uses shamans as intermediaries.
There are two ways to obtain a perewangan. First, the person has had it since childhood, but does not have control over the perewangan that follows them. In this case, if the person later realizes they have a perewangan and wants to fully possess it, they ask a shaman to insert the perewangan into their body.
Second, someone who initially does not have a spirit, then requests it from a shaman of their own accord.
“A shaman can find a spirit willing to enter and reside in a human body, and then insert it into the body of the person who requests it,” wrote the article by Dhanyang and Prewangan.
“Unlike the first model where the process of inserting prewangan is always successful, in the second model, it is not the case. Some who request to have prewangan inserted into their bodies do not succeed for various reasons,” he continued.
A person who possesses a prewangan and has the power to command it is then referred to as a perewangan shaman. In the business world, such as restaurants, perewangan is commonly referred to as “penglaris,” which means a supernatural being that helps boost the owner’s sales.
In the film Perewangan directed by Awi Suryadi, the story revolves around a spirit used as a charm to attract customers to Mrs. Sudarsih’s restaurant. However, the spirit does not offer its services for free. So what must Mrs. Sudarsih sacrifice for the wealth and glory of her restaurant?

Perewangan is a horror genre film adapted from a viral X thread by @JeroPoint. This film highlights the ancient tradition of associating with spirits or evil entities in order to achieve success and wealth. However, the price that the perpetrators must pay is extremely high.
In the film Perewangan 2024, the main character named Maya (Davina Karamoy) must bear the consequences of being terrorized by the ancestral spirit of her family. Not only Maya, but all her family members, from her younger siblings to her uncles, are not free from the terror of the perewangan demanding a life sacrifice.
Initially, after her father’s mysterious death, Maya harbored great suspicion towards her aunt and uncle, who seemed to be eyeing her mother’s inheritance, Sudarsih (Ully Triani), who had been ill for years and was reluctant to speak.
Since her father’s death, Maya’s uncles and aunt have increasingly shown their ambition to take control of the land and house inherited by Sudarsih. Maya has chosen to keep her distance from them.
Over time, the nightmares and terror experienced by Maya became increasingly severe. Her mother, who had been lying on the bed for years, began to show strange signs. Maya finally realized that what threatened her family was something more evil and cruel than human greed.
Maya was even more shocked when she found out that the evil creature terrorizing her family was none other than the result of her mother’s mistake.
In order to achieve momentary success, Sudarsih continues the ritual of communion with the spirit, and her family must bear the sacrifice of seven generations to satisfy the desires of the supernatural being. Now the creature has started targeting her child, Maya.
Perewangan film is directed by Awi Suryadi, the director who previously worked on the all-time highest-grossing Indonesian film, KKN di Desa Penari. Awi’s signature terrifying terror in Perewangan film will start haunting local cinemas from October 24, 2024.
This film also stars a lineup of famous actors, including Davina Karamoy, who successfully portrayed the cheating brother-in-law in the film “Ipar Adalah Maut“; renowned musicians Andy /rif and Shanty; and the keyboardist of the band Nidji, Randy Danistha.
