Undoubtedly, the story of Sorop film, adapted from SimpleMan’s thread, is indeed very terrifying. Can you imagine what the filming process was like? In fact, because it was so terrifying, the Sorop cast admitted that they performed a mandatory ritual, which was to take a saltwater bath after every shoot. What’s the point?
Before delving into the cast’s responses, aside from being known to be adapted from the SimpleMan Sorop thread which is actually still “unfinished,” the film Sorop tells the story of the term “sorop fasting” with the aim of summoning the spirits of the deceased. However, the consequences of such actions are certainly terrifying, even life-threatening.
“Sorop” itself means approaching evening or Maghrib, which is well-known in Javanese culture. Therefore, the story is closely tied to Kejawen.
The strong Javanese culture and the horror story that has gone viral since SimpleMan published it on X, plus this film directed by Awi Suryadi. It feels complete, doesn’t it? Some media outlets and film enthusiasts claim they are curious about the film Sorop, especially since it is directed by Awi Suryadi, an Indonesian director who managed to attract 10 million viewers for the film KKN di Desa Penari.
When will the movie Sorop be released? December 19, 2024, guys, take note!
Not only that, the horror film Sorop upholds the acting quality of players like Egi Fedly, Hana Malasan, Yasamin Jasem, and Ratu Felisha, which you might not expect. They had to be brave enough to do things beyond reason during the shooting process, one of which was taking saltwater baths after every shoot.
Sorop Casts Perform Mandatory Ritual: Salt Bath After Every Shoot – Chat Edition
Let’s read the Sorop cast’s conversation about the Sorop film and their activities while on set.
What does Sinom mean?
Egi Fedly: “A term of endearment for a child or nephew.”
What shooting scene traumatized you?
Tegar Satrya: “A bit more careful, because during the rehearsal, our director, Upi, felt a bit uneasy seeing my forehead jutting out like that, like a unicorn.”
Egi Fedly: “When I get back to the hotel, I have to take a shower. That makeup just won’t come off, it’s really hard. Even though I have to shower every day, I still get clean!”
Hana Malasan: “Because Uncle Egi has to whiten his entire body with makeup every day, it can’t be cleaned just with soap.”
Seroeja Hafiedz: “As soon as we arrived, we saw the other cast members having fun, but when we saw Uncle Egi, it was scary because of his makeup. We are indeed a crazy gang, not a gloomy gang,” she said while laughing.
There’s a memorable scene for Hana Malasan, “The memorable part was at the shooting location, the people were really sweet. We exchanged letters. Yasamin also suddenly came with something and a letter. The make-up team came in the morning to give us a letter, because they said they felt sorry for us filming every day, panting and shouting. So to keep our good mood up, we were given gifts.”
In addition, the cast of Sorop also held the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony on August 17 wearing various uniforms: some wore gas station uniforms, high school uniforms, elementary school uniforms, and so on.
What is the Sorop film about?
Tegar Satrya: “Clearly, something you have never imagined before.”
Egi Fedly: “I can imagine it, but I can’t tell you yet. Yes, basically, it means that people want to obtain something in a way that is not permitted by religion. That’s called “sorop.”
Seroeja Hafiedz: “Sorop is one of the beliefs in Java—by Maghrib, we must already be at home—many things beyond our control can have bad consequences. But in this film, when I read the script, how could it be made so wild in the story? A bit surprised.”
Hana Malasan: “In this film, it’s not just about horror, but there are also some strong scenes between siblings and how they face the terrors in this story.”
Yasamin Jasem: “We are being chased by something, but we can’t go anywhere. So, being constantly disturbed in one place is quite annoying. I can’t even imagine being in that position.”
What must be done during the sorop fasting?
Seroeja Hafiedz: “We fast, but breaking the fast is different from our regular rules.”
Yasamin Jasem: “In my opinion, sorop fasting is a lifestyle diet, very sustainable!” She said while laughing heartily.
Were there any obstacles or horror incidents while on the shooting location?
Hana Malasan: “We had a tumpengan ceremony twice because someone was sulking. Some wanted to join the shooting, but they weren’t cast,” she said, added by Egi Fedly.
Yasamin Jasem: “Many wanted to get into the frame, even scratching the door. So, it was dynamic, right?” (this refers to other creature in the shooting location, such as ghosts).
Additionally, Hana Malasan revealed a fun fact that the cast of Sorop has to take saltwater baths every time they return from the filming location. There are many possibilities: to cleanse oneself physically and spiritually. Now, how can it not be scary? The filming set is in an old abandoned Dutch building, for your information!
Professionalism is indeed number one, as proven by the Sorop cast who highly uphold this aspect. Bathing in saltwater, Egi Fedly has to have his entire body made up every day, scream, pant, and engage in other activities during filming. Salute!
