Sorop, the latest horror film from MD Pictures inspired by the sorop fasting ritual, will soon be released in theaters on December 19, 2024. Upi was chosen as the director to helm the film based on the viral thread by SimpleMan.

If you take a peek at the Instagram account @soropfilm, many people are anticipating Sorop as the most gruesome horror film that will close out in 2024. MD Pictures is also collaborating with Barunson E&A, a production house behind the Oscar-winning film Parasite, to promote the film Sorop on the international stage.

The film Sorop comes from a term in Javanese that indicates twilight or dusk. Additionally, the word “sorop” also refers to sorop fasting, an ancient ritual that is rarely practiced anymore. Curious about the sorop fasting? We’ll explain it here.

The Meaning of Sorop Fasting

As highlighted in the Simple Man thread about sorop fasting, the film Sorop will also tell the story of this ritual. The characters in this film are depicted performing sorop fasting, a ritual to meet the dead.

SimpleMan explains that sorop fasting is not much different from other fasts, which involve abstaining from food and drink. However, the difference is that when sorop or maghrib time arrives, the person observing puasa sorop will break their fast by eating the soil of the grave.

After that, the spirit of the body lying there will visit the person performing the sorop fasting and consume the soil of their grave. Therefore, the sorop fasting is usually practiced by someone who has lost their beloved and misses them.

It is said that during the colonial era, some husbands observed sorop fasting when their wives passed away. However, that doesn’t mean that sorop fasting is without any risks at all. It is said that those who perform this ritual will have their mental health disturbed.

If the sorop fasting is done continuously, the human mind will not be able to withstand it and will go insane.

The Film Sorop

Sorop tells the story of two siblings, Hanif (Hana Malasan) and Isti (Yasamin Jasem), who suddenly move into a haunted house with a terror that constantly haunts them.

Their story begins when their aunt asks them to return to their hometown and take care of their childhood home. At first, Hanif and Isti refused the request because the house was still occupied by their uncle and his wife. However, because their uncle was seriously ill and in critical condition, they eventually went home.

Hanif and Isti were shocked by the death of their uncle, which happened right before their eyes. After the uncle’s death, mystical terror began to occur and haunted the house. They could even see their deceased uncle come back to life. On the other hand, they also discovered their aunt’s strange habit of often eating graveyard soil.

Various abnormal events they experienced made the two siblings recall what happened in their childhood. Finally, Hanif and Isti must unravel the mystery related to their past.

What is in that house? What did their uncle do during his lifetime? All the answers are revealed in the film Sorop.
