Jakarta, April 15, 2025 – Eid is the most awaited moment for the Indonesian film industry. This is because the mainstay films from various production houses are shown at that time and compete with each other to target the box office, coinciding with the long holiday. And for the past four years, MD Pictures has always dominated the market share of Eid films, starting from Curse in the Dancing Village (2022) to Pabrik Gula (2025). Here are the top-grossing Eid films from MD.
In the latest report to April 15, 2025, four films produced by MD Pictures are included in the top 10 highest-grossing Eid films of all time. Curse of the Dancing Village is firmly in the top position with more than 10 million viewers, making it the highest-grossing Indonesian film in history.
For four years, the film directed by director Awi Suryadi, inspired by the phenomenal thread SimpleMan, has never been shifted.
In second place for the highest-grossing Eid film is still held by MD Pictures through Sewu Dino (2023) directed by Kimo Stamboel and received 4,886,406 viewers. Then, there is MD Pictures’ latest horror film, Pabrik Gula, which is in fourth place, which has attracted more than 4 million viewers in two weeks of screening and will continue to grow.
Meanwhile, the prequel to Curse of the Dancing Village, namely Dancing Village: The Curse Begins (2024) is in 5th place as the best-selling Eid film with a total of 4,015,120 viewers.
This year, Pabrik Gula is competing with four other Eid films in various genres, from horror to drama. And until entering the third week since its simultaneous release on March 31, Pabrik Gula is still in first place.
Pabrik Gula itself tells the scary story of seasonal workers in a sugar factory who have to deal with supernatural entities. This film was inspired by a viral thread by the writer SimpleMan.
In addition to being shown in Indonesia, Pabrik Gula was also released in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. In addition, on April 18, Pabrik Gula is scheduled to be shown in the USA.
Not only popular in Indonesia, Pabrik Gula is also booming in neighboring countries. In just four days of screening, the film has reportedly reached 1 million viewers in Malaysia.
Pabrik Gula is predicted to be MD Pictures’ latest mega hit, considering that this horror film is based on the phenomenal story of SimpleMan and is a reunion for the three figures behind the best-selling Indonesian film of all time, Curse of the Dancing Village, namely producer Manoj Punjabi, director Awi Suryadi, and writer Lele Laila.
Showing in two versions, Pabrik Gula Uncut has a slightly additional duration with a 21+ rating compared to the regular version which has a 17+ rating. Viewers can also choose to watch Pabrik Gula in regular cinemas, IMAX, or the 4DX version for a more immersive and impressive viewing experience.
