The Perewangan Film was indeed initially brought up from the viral Jero Point thread, but don’t think of it as just a freeform story on social media. This practice of witchcraft has become common knowledge, especially among business people like restaurant owners. At least in Indonesia, success is often said to be related to supernatural hands. That’s what is depicted in this film directed by Awi Suryadi. Here is the synopsis of Perewangan.
The alliance between humans and jinn forms the main storyline of the horror film Perewangan. The original story writer, Jero Point, admitted that he got the story directly from a source who was a victim of his mother’s perewangan. The source introduced herself as Maya—the name that was later also used for the main character in the film Perewangan.
Perewangan itself originates from the Javanese language, meaning ‘helper’. Well, in the world of witchcraft, perewangan is a spirit that makes a contract with humans to assist with their worldly affairs. Like a cheat in a game so the player can win instantly.
Unfortunately, people often forget that “there’s no such thing as a free lunch.” There is always a risk in everything that is instant. The genie who is ready to help his master become rich without breaking a sweat often demands a sacrifice that is unimaginable. That is what Maya then faced and was depicted in the film Perewangan with the theme “Seven Generations Sacrifice.”
“Many of us may not realize how close we are to the supernatural world, and this film explores that dark side,” said the director of Perewangan, Awi Suryadi, during the gala premiere at Cinepolis Senayan Park on Monday (21/10/2024).
The director, who also worked on the phenomenal horror film KKN di Desa Penari, explained that the film Perewangan not only offers a horror experience but also a strong theme of family—how the bond between siblings is all they have.
“I feel that Jero, maybe because the source who contacted him was a girl from the family, so the feel is more like a family drama. If I feel Jero’s thread, the feel is always like a family drama,” said Awi.

Sudarsih (Ully Triani) lives a life full of success. She inherited a large plot of land and a house from her father, then opened a restaurant called Ny. Sudarsih, which quickly became very popular. Together with her husband, Taryadi (Dian Sidik), they raised their two daughters, Maya (Davina Karamoy) and Wulan (Beby Evelyn), happily.
Until one day, Sudarsih began to behave strangely as if possessed, and since then, she never spoke again. Taryadi, who was shocked by his wife’s condition, then lost his sanity and was sent to a mental hospital.
After several years of treatment, Taryadi was allowed to go home. Accompanied by his brother-in-law, Dr. Roni (Septian Dwi Cahyo), Taryadi was reunited with his two children. Maya and Wulan welcomed their father’s return with joy.
However, that happiness lasted only a moment. The next day, Taryadi was found to have tragically committed suicide without leaving any message. In the midst of the mourning atmosphere, Maya had to confront her mother’s siblings whom she did not want to meet, namely Sumarni (Shanty), Bambang (Eduwart Manalu), and Sucipto. (Randy Danistha).
Her uncle and aunt pressured Maya to sell her grandmother’s inherited house to cover her mother’s medical expenses. Maya, feeling that they were only after her mother’s wealth, eventually drove them away.
After their father’s death, strange occurrences always haunted Maya and her sister. Her mother, who had been silent for years, began to speak. Although she was happy to see her mother’s condition improving, at the same time, Maya felt her mother was changing.
Uncle Roni finally revealed the family secret he had been keeping from Maya. How their ancestor, Wikarto (Andy/Rif), performed a heretical ritual to maintain the spirit. However, in exchange for wealth, he had to sacrifice his wives.
Wikarto had actually broken that cursed fate by sacrificing his own life. Unfortunately, Sudarsih continued the ritual to smooth her business. And when the time came for her to sacrifice her husband, Sudarsih actually broke the agreement.
Because of her mistake, the spirit is now starting to take over Sudarsih’s body and is targeting the sacrifice of her descendants. Anyone who stands in her way also becomes a victim. Including her three uncles and aunts who turned out to be trying to help Maya.
