What happens when children’s games (such as hide and seek) are combined with the urban legend of a child-snatching ghost on the big screen? That’s the kind of horror presented in the film Petak Umpet directed by Rizal Mantovani. This film is based on a true story that went viral on YouTube titled Diculik Wewe Gombel. Here is the synopsis of Petak Umpet film.
We are definitely familiar with the game of hide and seek. At school, we usually play it with friends during recess. With just a wall or a flagpole, we can have fun while also getting some exercise. If summarized in three words, hide and seek is an exciting, easy, and cheap game.
But did you know that in some cases, playing hide and seek can end in disaster? Whether it’s due to an accident or the accompanying mystical matters. This is the aspect that the horror film Petak Umpet, which will be released in Indonesian cinemas starting November 21, 2024, aims to showcase.
At the gala premiere of Petak Umpet at XXI Epicentrum Kuningan, South Jakarta, director Rizal Mantovani said this film is different from other horror films. Because Petak Umpet doesn’t just rely on jump scares from ghost appearances, but also offers an adventure story with a strong family theme.
“This is different, an adventure horror with a very strong family theme. Love and affection that become the cause of solving problems,” he revealed, Thursday (14/11/2024).
Petak Umpet producer, Rajesh Punjabi, also said that this film is suitable for all ages. Like food, the spiciness is noticeable, but not to the point of torturing the tongue.
“The story is really exciting, about family. Don’t worry, it’s not too horror, it’s very family-oriented, thrilling, and interesting,” said Rajesh.

Kidnapped by Wewe Gombel: Synopsis of the Hide and Seek Movie
The film Petak Umpet tells the story of a child who suddenly goes missing while playing hide and seek. It is said that the child was kidnapped by a wewe gombel while hiding in a haunted house.
The story begins when a mother asks her son, Rahman (Randy Martin), to watch over his younger sister, Sari (Alesha Fadhillah Kurniawan), playing outside. However, the older brother does not take the task of watching his sister seriously.
Rahman let Sari play hide and seek with her friends. Meanwhile, he was busy playing a game on his phone and only watching from a distance.
Unfortunately, they were playing hide and seek near an abandoned haunted house due to a murder incident. It is said that the mother who used to live in that house mercilessly took the lives of her children after discovering her husband cheating.
Since it was no longer inhabited, the house became haunted, and adults warned their children to stay far away from it. Because that house had become the lair of wewe gombel, an urban legend creature known for abducting children—especially when dusk arrives.
Sari broke the earlier prohibition. He chose to hide in that haunted house so that his friends would have difficulty finding him. Moments after entering, he asked for permission from the inhabitants there because he saw the silhouette of a woman behind the door.
Meanwhile, outside, Sari’s friends were confusedly searching for her whereabouts. Almost half an hour passed, and she still hadn’t been found. One of his friends reported to Rahman. They suspected that his younger brother was hiding in a haunted house and was kidnapped by a wewe gombel.
At first, Rahman did not believe in such superstitions. However, after his younger brother was still missing, he began to consider the possibility.
Sari’s disappearance left her mother, Masayu (Putri Ayudya), deeply devastated. All night long, she wept for her daughter. Rahman, feeling guilty, then intended to enter the haunted house where Sari was hiding. He was accompanied by his two friends, Rinto (Adam Farrel) and Shila. (Saskia Chadwick).
Rinto believes that the wewe gombel kidnaps children not to harm them, but to take care of them. Even so, Rahman insisted on searching for his younger sibling because their mother was still hysterical.
Not long after the three of them entered the haunted house, the door suddenly closed by itself. Rahman was immediately shocked and panicked.
He tried banging on the door, but it was in vain. They then decided to split up to search for Sari inside. It was there that many strange events befell Rahman and his friends.
They heard a threat from a woman believed to be the wewe gombel. The woman asked them to leave the house and stop the search. If they still insist, she will eat them all.
The three people who came to save Rahman’s younger sibling now become the victims who need to be rescued in turn.
That is the synopsis of the film Petak Umpet, which will officially premiere in all Indonesian cinemas on November 21, 2024. Watch the movie Petak Umpet with your loved ones and experience a thrilling yet nostalgic childhood memory.
